With over 20,000 square km (7,800 square miles) , Ruaha is the largest national park in East Africa. It boasts about 10 percent of the world’s lion population, as well as one of the largest elephant populations anywhere. Explore the vast plains of this great wilderness in south-central Tanzania, without any other safari vehicle in sight.
Untouched by tourism
Ruaha is one of the largest and richest wildlife sanctuaries in Africa. It is still untouched by time or tourism and really off the beaten track. Therefore it offers an intimate authentic safari experience. If you are looking for a truly wild place, this is it. Almost all large mammal African species can be found in Ruaha like giraffes, elephants, lions and wild dogs. Moreover, the park is filled with unusual antelopes like Sable and Roan and both Greater and Lesser Kudu.
Great Ruaha River
The Ruaha River is a very important river in central Tanzania. It flows almost 500 km (300 miles) from the Kipengere Mountains, through wetlands and Ruaha National Park into the Rufiji River in the Selous. For wildlife it’s a key source of water, particularly during the dry season. The perfect hunting ground for big cats like lions, cheetahs and leopards. The Ruaha River also features a large number of hippos and crocodiles and large herds of elephants dominate the river banks.
Spectacular scenery
Ruaha is well known for its beautiful, rugged scenery. The fertile river creates spectacular valleys, rolling hills, forests, natural springs and grassy plains. Massive ancient baobabs dot the savannah and small mountains add another sight to the landscape. Ruaha has a more diverse landscape than most of the park in the north of Tanzania. You can explore this unique landscape best on a walking safari or game drive.
