Ngorongoro Crater
One of the Seven Natural Wonders of Africa is the beautiful Ngorongoro Crater. This giant crater, 20 km (12,5 mi) wide and 600 m (2,000ft) deep, is a wilderness haven. With over 30,000 animals, it is home to the highest density of big game in Africa. Due to the mix of savannas, swamps, lakes and woodland, it forms an unique ecosystem. The Ngorongoro Crater is truly a world within a world.
Collapsed volcano
The crater was created a few millions years ago when a huge volcano exploded and collapsed. Hence, it became a natural sanctuary for many wildlife species due to the fertile soil and huge variety of flora. Today the Ngorongoro Crater is known as the largest intact caldera (collapsed volcano) in the world and is one of the main reasons why travelers visit Tanzania.
Big Five animals
The crater is one of the best places to see the rare black rhino and other members of the Big Five: elephant, leopard, buffalo and lion. With enough fresh water and various flora in the crater year-round, wildlife is diverse and has no need to migrate. The grounds of the crater floor house a dense population of predators, like lions, hyenas, jackals, cheetahs and leopards. Furthermore, it includes hippos, elephants, flamingos, ostriches, zebras and baboons. It’s easy to spot animals on the open crater floor, which is mainly flat.
