Tarangire National Park
Tarangire National Park is a picturesque wildlife haven in the north of Tanzania, a two-hour drive from Arusha. It has one of the most beautiful sceneries with thousands of majestic baobab trees dotting the hilly landscape. Another big draw of Tarangire is the huge bird and elephant population. The park is brimming with elephants bathing and drinking at the Tarangire River. Especially during the dry season lots of animals gather around the Tarangire River, which is the only permanent source of water in the area.
Elephant and bird paradise
Tarangire is reputed to have one of the highest concentration of elephants in the world, around 3,000. It’s a beautiful sight to see hundreds of elephants roaming the place, drinking at the Tarangire River. What would an African safari be without these massive creatures? However, Tarangire is not only about elephants, it’s a paradise for many animals. If you are a bird lover this park will certainly capture your heart with over 500 bird species. Spot parrots, kori bustards, lovebirds, hornbills and eagles. The sparkling swamps in Tarangire are home to one of the largest selections of breeding birds anywhere in the world.
Tarangire River
Although Tarangire is not as famous as the Serengeti, it is the sixth largest national park in Tanzania and utterly beautiful. It offers a mix of landscapes, from rivers, swamps and green hills with baobabs and termite mounds to dense forest. The lovely swamps are the perfect place to spot lots of tropical birds but also leopards, cheetahs, lions and tree-climbing pythons. Tarangire is very green and lush since the permanent water of the Tarangire River is running through the park. Specially during the dry season the banks of the river burst to life when wildlife from miles around gather at the river to drink.
