Selous Game Reserve
If you’re looking for an authentic safari experience, give Selous Game Reserve a go. The beautiful pristine scenery and abundance of wildlife in this southern reserve shows nature at its best. Moreover, this is one of the few destinations in Africa where you can see the rare black rhino and the largest population of wild dogs. Another big draw of Selous is the variety of safari activities, from game drives to walking safaris and boat cruises.
Rufiji River
Covering an area of 45,000km, Selous is Arica’s largest game reserve and about four times the size of Serengeti. It’s a gorgeous reserve with a diverse landscape ranging from rivers, swamps and hot springs to savannahs, forest and rocky outcrops. The lifeline of Selous is the 600 km (370 miles) long Rufiji River that flows through the reserve. This is for sure a vital water source for the flora and fauna and attracts lots of elephants, hippos and crocodiles.
World Heritage Site
Due to the diversity of its wildlife and undisturbed nature, Selous is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The large numbers of Africa’s big game, such as the hippo, elephant, crocodile, giraffe, buffalo and wild dog, is unsurpassed. Not to mention over 440 bird species that mostly live around the river banks, swamps and lagoons. Since Selous is relatively unknown, travelers visiting this reserve have it almost all for themselves.
Safari activities
Experience the wonders of this enormous wilderness on foot, by vehicle or on a river boat cruise. Selous is one of the few reserves where you can view game from the water. Enjoy sightings of hippos, crocodiles and colorful birds along the Rufiji River. Walking safaris on the other hand are a great way to get close to nature. On foot you really become part of the wilderness and your senses thrum to life.
