Kidepo Valley National Park
Surrounded by mountains, Kidepo Valley lies in a rugged savanna valley, close to Uganda’s border with Kenya and Sudan. This hidden gem in the northern wilderness of Uganda is one of the most remote and loveliest parks in the country. Here you can still experience pure wilderness and splendid beauty, away from the crowds. With over 85 species of mammals and 500 different birds, wildlife watching is good year-round.
Four of the Big Five
This park is home to four of the Big Five; elephant, leopard, buffalo and lions. There are many species you can find nowhere elsewhere in Uganda, such as cheetahs, aardwolves, hyenas, ostriches and caracals. Furthermore, there are plenty of rare birds you can spot in this park, like the black-breasted barbet, pygmy falcon and bearded vulture. With nearly 500 species recorded, Kidepo is a must-visit for birdwatchers.
Narus Valley
The main wildlife viewing circuit in Kidepo is the Narus Valley, which means ‘muddy valley’ in the local language. The Narus River supplies the area with permanent water and creates swamps and shallow pool which attract lots of wildlife. Enjoy spectacular sights of hundreds of elephants. These plains are also teemed with thousands of buffaloes, while lions lie lazily on rocks overlooking the valley.
From savanna to palms
The vegetation in the park varies from open savanna grassland, dominated by acacia trees, to forests on the mountain slopes. The Kidepo Valley is known for its white sandy river bed covered by beautiful Borassus palm trees. Not to mention the ‘healing’ Kanangorok Hot Springs on the south Susan border, where you have a gorgeous view of the mountains. Kidepo is not like any other park in Uganda.
