Bwindi Impenetrable Forest

Bwindi Impenetrable Forest is a beautiful green forest that lies on the edge of the Great Rift Valley in southwest Uganda, close to the border of the Democratic Republic of Congo. This beautiful park is one of the best places to track wild mountain gorillas on foot. Bwindi is home to about 350 mountain gorillas, which is half of the world’s population. Moreover this park offers great wildlife viewing and has one of the richest ecosystems in Africa.

Mountain gorillas

Bwindi is home to 39 gorilla families who roam in the wild jungle. Only 12 families are familiar to humans and can be accessed. Yet, tracking gorillas through the thick rainforest requires patience. It can take hours of tracking before you find them. The humidity and steep slopes can be a challenge, but it’s definitely all worthwhile. Nothing beats a up-close encounter with an incredibly strong silverback. Without a doubt, mountain gorilla trekking is one of the most thrilling wildlife experience Africa offers.

Impenetrable forest

Though mountain gorillas are the main draw of this park, Bwindi it is more than a gorilla reserve. It is among the most diverse forests in East Africa due to the range of altitude and habitats. The deep river gorges, swamps, low hills and high-forested ridges are home to a fabulous variety of flora and fauna. It is a hotspot for butterflies and birds and other primates like the golden monkey, black-and-white colobus monkeys, chimpanzees and L’Hoest’s monkeys. Other mammals you can spot in the forest are jackals, civets, bush pigs, forest hogs, antelopes and elephants. This park definitely makes you fall in love with Uganda.
