  1. Mount Kilimanjaro is the highest mountain in Africa (5,895 m, 19,341 ft) and the tallest free-standing mountain in the world.
  2. Lake Victoria is Africa’s largest lake and the world’s second largest fresh water lake with a surface of 69,500 sq.km (27,000 sq mi).
  3. Lake Tanganyika is Africa’s deepest lake (1436 m) and the world’s longest freshwater lake.
  4. The Great Wildebeest Migration in the Serengeti is the largest overland migration in the world (about 2 million mammals).
  5. Tanzania has the highest concentration of animals per square kilometre in the world. It is home to 20% of Africa’s large mammal population.
  6. Ngorongoro Crater is the largest intact volcano in the world.
  7. Selous Game Reserve, 54,000km² in size, is the largest protected wilderness reserve in Africa.
  8. Lake Natron is one of the world’s most toxic lakes. The poisonous plants (blue-green algae) in this alkaline water produce chemicals that fatally damage most animals, except flamingos. That’s why Lake Natron is the most important breeding site in the world for 2.5 million Lesser Flamingos.
  9. Tanzania has the largest population of African wild dogs (painted dogs) in Africa and also the elephant population is one of the continent’s largest.
  10. The Ol Doinyo Lengai is the world’s only carbonatite volcano. The lava erupts at relatively low temperatures, giving the lava a black appearance in sunlight, as opposed to the orange/red coloured lava of other volcanoes.
